Is there a reason to make a non-homebased station?

My usual thing to do is if I make a non-homebase station or other base is to litter the area with defense satellites and stick a couple of huge guns on it specifically for murdering player ships in as few shots as possible.

so is it feasable to be able to hide a station in unclaimed space? and can you actually make it defensable?

We definitely need to make it more worthwhile to capture vs destroy.
