    Hello everyone!

In recent weeks, we have seen the addition of a vast amount of new and fun content to the game, including new blocks, new weapon types, AI improvements, and (my personal favorite!) colored weapons.

So what's this thread all about?
These new things are all great, but many in the community are finding the default values for things such as shields and weapons to be sorely lacking or horribly unbalanced. Shields have been greatly buffed, while the functionality of weapons have been greatly nerfed.

In all this frustration and confusion, I, along with several others in the community, have reached out to the devs on these issues in an effort to have them fixed. Unfortunately, the positive changes we have asked for have not been very well-heard-out by them still, so Comr4de, a former tester and distinguished veteran member of the Starmade community, has taken it into his own hands on our behalf to fix these balancing issues. We are finding the balancing process is somewhat tedious but it is working out successfully, and drastically differing ship tiers are now beginning to be able to interact with each other much more appropriately than ever before.

So where do we come in?
We need your help to get the Better Balance Mod off the ground, and get maximum valuable input from the in-game community about what they want to see fixed in the game. We need experienced players who play Starmade every day to help us out with this, and give us their feedback. But we especially need the raw in-game hands-on experience of multiplayer-servergoers to help us determine what does and doesn't work, and what issues are really dissatisfying people.

With any luck, once we get enough in-game input from the community, we can come out with a fully-formed and well-balanced mod that sets the different ship sizes and combat aspects of this game into its most-appropriate place, that allows fun combat and gameplay for everyone, REGARDLESS of what ship size they like to use.
And, if we get REALLY lucky, we can grab enough attention from Schema about this and he may implement these fixes into the default game, and then everyone will be able to enjoy balanced Starmade combat without the cumbersome process of using custom mods!

If you are a server hoster or admin on a Starmade server, and you would be interested in having Better Balance Mod on your server, PM Comr4de on the forums.
Alternatively, if you are a player on a multiplayer server and you want to see Better Balance Mod on your universe, we encourage you to message your server's hosters and admins, and ask them about this :)

Servers interested so far in having Better Balance Mod:
    • NASS (North American Starmade Server)

For those concerned this mod will upset the status quo on servers: yes, we are concerned about that too, but any such change from such a broken system to a better one is bound to be well worth it. We expect there to be some issues- as with any mod there are- but we will fix them ASAP when they arise.

(This thread is about having the mod implemented on a public server. We are looking for willing server hosters, not personal forum opinions. Please do not debate here what you do and don't want to see in the mod, or what you think needs to be fixed in the game. If you want to say what you want fixed, please post about it HERE in the Better Balance Mod thread. Thanks!)

On all NASS servers? He did not tell me this. As far as I know the only server this will be tested on is NASS Main (unless you want it tested on yours too, which we will be happy to do).

On one hand, it would make sense if the Battlezone, Destiny Industrial Shipyards, and Hardcore servers also used the Balanced Combat Mod, as they are all under the same flag/IP as NASS servers. Because they share a website and server URL (only the port identifies which server you're joining), using the BCM on all would add to the consistency. If they all have the BCM configuration, then a ship can be built in DIS with the ability to see how it'd perform under the mod, flown in NASS Main with the already-compatible design, and used just as effectively in Battlezone if needed or desired. Hardcore could benefit from the rebalancing under its "increased difficulty" selling point and BCM's shield adjustments, depending on what its own configuration is set to in comparison. In addition, it maximizes the amount of available testers for NASS and Comr4de, increasing the likelihood of someone finding any balance issue that might have gotten missed in the initial development.

On the other hand, keeping the different servers under their own configs means that if some of the players do not like BCM at all, they still have one or more potential NASS servers on which to play. Since a player base is an extremely important resource for game servers, the benefits have to be weighed very carefully with the potential of losing people to other servers which continue to use default/near-default combat. There is also the fact that pre-BCM ship designs might get altered in effectiveness to the point of requiring a refit, but this can't really be counted too much against the mod because game updates can make that happen (See: 0.15 and its subsequent thruster patch).

    TL;DR:

Pros to BCM On All NASS Servers:
    - Consistency
    - Cross-server compatible ship designs
    - More testing

    Cons:
    - Might lose players if they hate the BCM.
    - Some re-existing ships might need refitting to work effectively, but this can happen anyway with Schine updates.
