If I update my game will my server update, and will it save?

I wanna update my game and server so one of my friends just starting who has a newer version can play with me. But I don't want to lose what I have so far, so if I update will I lose my mulitplayer servers save? Or does it transfer over? Thanks.

I updated mine. Acording to file the stuff I built are still in game, however I am not where I was last. I ended up back at my spawn, with a new inventory. Dont know if this is suposed to hapen, but keep this in mind.

We are really just getting started, had found a empty base and had been using it for just a couple of days when a Update to the game was rolled out and it was indicated that we update our server for security. Once that was done however all of that work was gone, all our ships were gone and our starting money set back to default, and all back at original spawn.

Is there no way to save a universe? Or no way to migrate our current universe into the next update so that we dont have to start over each time?
