I've been playing for a few months and have found the community to be great. The game while in alpha definitely has active development. If you're used to running a minecraft server then I would recommend running a small private server for starmade for you and your friends to learn the game as it's usually easier to learn with others. As the others have said DO THE TUTORIAL.

But most of all have fun.

Community may make you cry, but only because their ships are so much better.

Can confirm, tears a direct result of viewing other players' creations. Out of all the voxel based games, StarMade has one of the steepest learning curves. It also happens to have the highest level of mastery; the stuff you can potentially build is infinitely more impressive than Minecraft or Space Engineers.

As for your question about the community, it's small and often resorts to tribalism. Many of the veterans have been around for too long and have either become part of the development of the game in some way, disappeared, or become a "grumpy old person" and got themselves banned.
