How To: Give items to players when they first join server

Does anyone know how a server admin can grant an item to players when they first join. I've seen this done on other servers and I'd like to do it on my own. I'd like to be able to give players a completed schematic for a ship when they join the server for the first time.

Any help/suggestions is appreciated.
