How do you make ship look good?

I've always found this to be my bigest hurtle, could anyone give me some tips?

well for one. what looks good to one person looks like crap to another but I always work from the core out. make the interior the way ya want then add the thrusters weapons shields as you build you shouls see a shape start to form but if you dont like the shape when you add the outter layers you can always make the outside look how you want then go around and smooth the edges and ad the decrations

And make design modifications as neccesary to accomodate the systems inside. The DFN Lytra is a prime example of this in action.
