How can I get the most out of my game and increase FPS

I want to clarify I have no idea about computers but I run Starmade on a my personal machine, an iMac running OS X mavericks 10.9.3 and before the huge graphics updates and whatnot I could carve out a solid 30 to 40 fps but since then I'm lucky if I can keep it running at least 20 that is if I am staring off into empty space. What I trying to get at here fellas is.... Is there some way I can run StarMade barebones to maximize performance and still have a good time and build capital ships with out My game melting.
