why not a way to see the sector 3d like the little map up in the top right corner but in the world?
[DOUBLEPOST=1450580327,1450580281][/DOUBLEPOST]if we could have a holographic projection of the sector inside like a 3x3 space, it would look very nice, good addition to rp ships and stations

Yeah, a block that renders the minimap inside it would be immersive and really cool.

also this would be a great roleplay item, as if the navigation computer were to be completely removed, then you wouldnt know where anything is so this would be ideal as a navigation computer, futher streessing the need for roleplaying ships

Oh, so make it also function as the nav system? That is actually a really good idea. Also, hitting "R" on it should bring up the starmap and let you set courses, in that case. (In fact, most of the current nav functions that are tied to the player should probably become tied to the ship via something like this.)

and thus if you are heading somewhere and log out the ship would keep the heading and you dont have to try and reember the coords
so the ship would stay on that heading, and also the coords system and bookmarks would be kept as a ship by ship basis
[DOUBLEPOST=1451956074,1451956025][/DOUBLEPOST]so for one ship you may be heading somewhere but in another you can enter another set of coords and go there and come back, get back to the other ship, warp to the other set of coords, and such
so then that would be even better to go this this
[DOUBLEPOST=1451956106][/DOUBLEPOST]because this would be your personal nav

I'm a big fan of the blocks that render minimaps inside them. Using them for navigation seems a little out of reach at the moment, but they could probably be connected with the scanner modules.

The blocks would need to be group based and the image might scale with the dimensions of the box.

Some sort of Nav systems are planned. We discussed an idea like this a bit over a year ago now and thought it sounded cool, so it may happen, may not, it just matters where we end up taking Nav systems. I for one have always thought it was a cool idea.

maybe a local galaxy map where you can see the 5x5x5 cube of systems, and basically their faction relation to you

Is this something that we can scale like docking ports and storage areas? Will it update in real-time as planets revolve? Will it display every object, or just friendly objects, or just objects visited? Can I change the color of the hologram? If I scale up the display area to a 10x10, can I still have it only display the current sector just with bigger graphics?

    So many details to consider...

    yes
but it wont display everything, it will only display things like explored parts of the galaxy that you have explored, the faction tab wont show homebases, unless you are in that faction, and you cant really see stations so you have to explore to find things, and you can "upload" it to a station's holographic computer, and when you do that, anything that downloads that gets their holographic ship computer updated to that, and you can scale it like the old docking blocks, but instead of expanding the area for turrets or docked entities on a ship, it expands the sectors to a max (can be configured in the .config files) of maybe a 3x3 cube around you, or if u wanna just make the display bigger, then you can set that in the menu of either the ship or by pressing R to activate it
[DOUBLEPOST=1452122256,1452120390][/DOUBLEPOST]it would display faction stations waypoints, and even other ships so you dont have to go into a separate window and try and figure out if theres a pirate station while your charging your jump drives

also it would display both visted objects, stations that you havent visted arent visible to make it realistic, now if u happen upon a stick station or a trade station, you can "dock" to it and "upload" the files from its "map room" and thus you can get an idea of what the station has picked up and you can upload what you have discovered to your factions homebase

just had an idea for a new "block' that would be a part of this:
it would be like the teleporter beacon, but it would be a "flashdrive" that you can pull the map data from other ships and put it into your own ship, it also contains all your "ships" data, so if you die, you can remake it in a basic factory, and it will be a starter for when you first join a server, you get one of these

Better dedicate a transparent block/block collective for it with a fixed center which represents the area around the flagship, then add a new comp to operate it and boss around ships like homeworld, fleet command systems computer, we seriously need a way to see what's around us in the same sector.
Imagine low quality renders in the battle map.
Perhaps link the scanner systems to it for additional functions as slave?
The large map is better suited for long range travels.

yes i know im reviving this thread but with the new fleet function, i think that it could be used as an "uplink" to the flagship, so we can see what exactly is in the sector and be able to tell it what to atttack and what to not attack, also being able to see if the mine current sector will work or not, so if there is no actual mineable object in the sector the option shouldnt be highlighted
