Just found out about this game recently and have been playing around with it for just over a week now. I like figuring things out for myself, so I've been using the online tutorials and watching youtube videos. Finally made an assault craft that can handle the starter pirates (some are even running away from me now!) Very cool stuff and I have a lot of questions, but I'll save those for the next thread. I'm about to go thru Bench's Logic tutorials, so I'm sure I'll be back very soon. :D

Great game so far! Keep up the good work.

Welcome to Starmade, and I'm glad you're finding the game fun! It'll be changing and adding a lot of features while it's in alpha, so be prepared to encounter new things (including new bugs) with almost every update.

Hi there. I recently learned the value of new players (when I joined, haha!). So it is very nice to see someone new here, and I hope you'll enjoy starmade as much as I do.

Just one quick question: have you ever turned the dampening off in the server config (set both linear and rotational to 0), and then encountered pirates? If not, do that, and you'll come back here to tell me what you thought of it. Hint: it is a bug. Do it before it gets fixed, otherwise you won't be able to use it later during discussions! ;)

Edit: Please, go ahead and post new threads, suggest new things, and above all: play starmade!
Here is a list of things for you to do:
    1. Enjoy the anticipation of kupu's new default texture pack work!
    2. Hope that the function enable_break_off gets fixed!
    3. Count down the days to new updates by looking by the bug tracker under 'upcoming release!
    4. Find bugs!
    5. Find more bugs!
    6. Report the unreported bugs!
    7. Fiddle with the server config!
    8. Try out the 10 000 sector size!
    9. Always play with at least a sector size of 2 000!
    10. Strand yourself on a planet with nothing but a plex undeathinator and survive to rebuild!
    11. Build a massive structure!
    12. Build nice ships using all the different types of decorative blocks!
And be sure to mess around with all the other configs.

And also check out bench's thread on logic, has channel and his hud! And definitely check out his WIP shipyard site. It is going to be fun!

There will be may, may other things that should be on this list, but sadly it would then get too long. Just look around on the forum, youtube, starmade's twitter, the servers and oh so many more things!

Pirates can't handle that and play "dancing around in 10km distance" rather than attacking you.

    I suggest a dampening of 0.2 or 0.3 and speed limit = 25 to 50 * sector-size/1000.

Build your starter ships always with > 1:1 thrust:mass or you may get stranded on a planet (you will have to delete blocks from that ship to go up again).

If you visit planets, never enable collision damage until it's fixed. Even with just a core and <3m/s you will die every time you land on a planet.
Only way to get out without crashing the ship you are building: make a gravity unit facing upward :)

Don't forget to connect salvage computer not only to salvage modules, but also a cannon computer.
1 salvage module and 1 cannon module in a group (connected to their computers) and spaced apart from each other s/c module are a lot more effective.

Holy shit I've been starmade'ing for over a year now and I still haven't done some of those things.
    I should stop procrastinating.

But then again I use starmade to procrastinate.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I think I have most of the basic ship functions sorted, though I'm not sure about the shields caps/rechargers and the power caps. I think I've over powered my ship. The pirates can't get through my shielding, so I will step up to the next difficulty level and see how the ship handles then. I'll be back soon with some real questions.

Tip: If you're in single player, and want to increase difficulty a bit, you can, as admin, define which ships are usable by pirates in Catalog > Admin > [select a ship] > permissions > EnemyUsable (Checked)

That's a fancy way to test your ships and turrets :3

Just play around with the power generators to see what works best. The shield capacitors and power capacitors just have to be mass placed together for big bonuses.

One thing you really need to do: try using only the crafting recipes and not the shops to survive. It is a lot more fun than just salvaging the first thing you see.

And there is a more reliable way to create enemies, and that is by using commands, but I'm honestly the wrong person to ask which commands. I come as far as giveid and give_credits, and also destroy_entity(_dock, if you want to destroy turrets and docked ships too).

    to spawn enemies
    /spawn_mobs myshipname -1 10
or /spawn_mobs "my ship has a space in its name" -1 10
10 is the # of ships spawned pick any number
anything over 80 spawned at once will cause alot of lag (yes im talking 80 isanths)

this, absolutely this... just pretend like the shops dont exist for now (they are very broken and unbalanced for survival. if you use shops right now, you might as well be playing in creative mode) i played about a month using shops before taking funnybunnys advice and ignoring them (and abandoned stations) COMPLETELY! and i haven't gone back since. not only have i refused to use the shops, i dont WANT to! the game is just ten times more fun and interesting that way. every single block counts and everything you do gives you a sense of accomplishment and progression.

just be sure to make regular back ups and start your self off with a few million credits to be able to place down a space station or two. (they artificially cost a million credits to place a single grey hull) enable start sector protection or claim a planet using a faction module. as pirates are also a unbalanced at the moment. and make going crafting only almost impossible without having some sort of protected base. just be prepared for when you leave your sector or planet, cuz that sh*t can get ugly fast, especially when you have like a 30 block mass beginner ship with minimal EVERYTHING :p

plus this way your ships and station come out much more sophisticated well thought out and designed. because thought goes into every block made/placed. my ships and station are coming out much more interesting because of this. i cant stress enough how bad shops are for survival at the moment.

as for blue prints, obviously save the ships you make so you have all your designs on file. but avoid purchasing any ships at all until the shops/economy get balanced/reworked. this also keeps you on your toes because if you ship goes bye bye then its bye bye for good. (in terms of blocks which are oh so precious) and keeps you from making rash and ultimately less entertaining decisions.

 for reals? i heard people mention that a couple times, but in the context i thought it was an upcoming feature!

(runs off to check server config...) holy crap your right! its there near the very bottom! probably why i missed it. awesomeness! thanks man. i was totally waiting for this feature. :D silly uninformed me. huzza! i can now fully exploit blueprints in a none cheaty way! i like to think of it as....super advanced instant buildmode! :p

Edit to add: since my ships are still fairly modest (with the exception of the WIP mother ship) inv limits shouldnt be an issue for now. im sure soon enough well be able to use storage devices or some form of ship yeards for more complex ships. for now this should be more then enough.

Wow thanks for all the tips! Currently I am playing singleplayer until I'm ready to build a real ship. The one I'm toying with right now has no style. Though she may not look like much, she's got it where it counts. It has 10 reactor cores (5x5x5 hollow with power caps as fillers). 600ish each of shield caps and rechargers, laid out in 5x5 sheets covering all 10 reactor cores. A lots weapons and missles stacks, each with 16 blocks, which hardly use any energy when fired, so I feel I am wasting resources and ship mass in this way. Almost 4000 thrusters, so it reaches 0 to 74.8 in 3.5 seconds, but it's sluggish as hell when turning. Too much mass maybe? 8 cores and 2000 thrusters would probably have been enough for the loadout I'm using.

I'm playing everything as default atm. I haven't messed with anything in the game folder except for finding my screenshots. As for the shops, I've been stock piling everything I've been looting ever since I realized I could buy and use a shop module for storage. Today I've been flying deep into space, killing pirates and selling everything to any shops I find. Made almost 100 million just from a couple of pirate encounters. My next experiment will be to mount turrets on my cruiser, though I serious doubt I need them. At that point I think I'll be ready to jump onto a server and try some of the survival tips given here. Thanks again everyone. :)
