This follows on a discussion to incentivize ships interior , as opposed to the current state of solid shield block / power tank / weapon battery volumes. It mainly applies to the larger ships (at least 50 wide)
Make each individual subsystem (linked modules) require more surface exposed to empty space the larger it gets. Very small antimatter cannons could do with just the muzzle side exposed , while larger ones would have to show their insides. An infinite line of modules could only afford to touch 4 other blocks.
Because subsystems could be easily disrupted if exposed to gunfire outside your ship , the safer option is to keep them inside an enclosed , hollow volume - your ship hull. Then , a tidy and accessible ship interior would be easier to repair after a hull breach.
