    hello again
    here with another wacky idea
I was thinking it be nice to have 2 invisible cubes that you can
connect with the C and V key
    set a thickness
    set a color
    set the amount of slack
    and the direction of gravity

to create a wire effect that you can use in stations and on ships
for example role play electrical or gas cables.. mby even connect a turret with the ship

    Expanding on the idea:
Invisible Anchor Block as the first block.
Invisible Chain block and invisible cable block as subsequent blocks, to set the kind of cable, whether it will be round (cable) or a chain link.
Use C-V to link them in a chain, and as the player, you can draw exactly where the cables go.
Link the anchor block to a series of activation blocks to create varying thickness, ranging from thread to meter-wide diameter.
Link the anchor block to a light block to change the color of the cable/pipe/chain.
Link the anchor block to a gravity block to set the direction of gravity.
Link the anchor block to a speed controller block (or something similar) to adjust the slack (bend in the direction of gravity from one point on the block chain to the next.
Turn the linked light on to make the cable have a subtle glow or fullbright glowmap. (Could be used to simulate a red-hot plasma conduit pipe or something) Turn off the attached light to leave it as a simple cable/chain.
Link the anchor block to a NOT logic block to enable ghost mode. Players can pass through the cable/chain, to simulate lifting it out of their path as they pass by.

If you're thinking of cosmetics, you could try using light rods. Just be sure to turn them off and they look kinda like power lines or cables.

    yes it is for cosmetics
but I have a hard time creating a bend/swing/sag/sway/slack effect i usually see in hanging cables as illustrated in this image

these rods can only be positioned in 90 degree angles
but cables with a natural bend * in the computer world * are made of segments that use a multitude of rotations.

another problem with this static way of making cables is the lack of movement
an example is when you connect a turret with the hull, you will see the cable stretch and swing
this can not be achieved with using rods

Ok. Now, I'm catching what you're dropping. Disregard then.

That's gonna be some painful programming though... Hopefully the Schine team will be up to the challenge.

Seems like a rather funny idea :D
I don't see why we can't have this, but I rather have real features before the cosmetic stuff.

its a vector shaped object that might need sin or cos and a amplitude

Seems like a rather funny idea :D

    yea...
that seems to suggest that starmade is featureless atm :P

HolyCookie Let's make this with feature then!!

add in a value for elasticity, elasticity is a fixed value. And the length of the cable is fixed once we leave build mode.
Then we can have a TOW CABLE. which we can use to drag entities like cargo container without any thrust on themselve
we can drag those behind our ship to travel around when the hangar is full. But because it is just cable,
it can't take the enormous force when jumping, so if cargo container or other entities are towed with cable
and you try to jump with jump drive, there should be a chance that the cable will break and you will lost the towed item during jump

Tow cables don't work so well in space because there's no friction. If you accelerate to 1 m/s, then decelerate back to 0, the thing you're towing will still be moving at 1 m/s. If you want to slow it down, you'd have to completely flip it around (while still moving at 1 m/s), then thrust in the opposite direction to stop it. Not to mention the angular momentum it would gain when you turn it.

Also, why not make the cables work as some sort of zipline to give more than just a decorative use? The player could buy a tool that attaches them to nearby cables and moves them along the cable, deciding the direction depending on the angle of the curve at the entry point. While 'attached' to a cable the player could jump/grapple to dismount and select other items as well! The tool could be called the Cable Roller or something like that.

Hey, that is a good idea. Add an aesthetic block but incorporate it into the gameplay +1

This is very cosmetic and because it serves little purpose elsewhere, it would probably get a look at once we do shader / particle work. Till then this will be archived.
