It would be really nice if you could build gates in sectors that everyone can use

Eve and countless other sci fi universes, they\'re not the first ones to think of linear accelerators, but yeah I think that is where he got the idea considering the nomenclature.

Any real reason other than to lessen PvP chances?

At the very least one warp gate thingy at the spawn point, it would give a one time teleport to any sector you type in and give new players a chance to get out of harms way. Older players preying on new players is not fun nor fair. It would help cut down on spawn point camping. preying on new players is not pvp at all, it is terrorism
