Welcome to my thread, where I present to you the following:

    Gamesaucer's
    Classification for Everything
    or simply
    ClEver
(Please tell me if the name's too cheesy)

As you may or may not know, I've pulled a ship classification out of my pocket once already. It's still on the old site and grossly outdated. It had some great improvements over the then big classification systems, Blitzwing and Nameless: Not everything was based on mass, length or other null-tells. I had a graph.

However, that was also its biggest flaw. While I got praise for my creative approach people also wanted to know exact numbers. Moreover, my graph only had two dimensions, for obvious reasons, which still wasn't the best for classifying ships properly. I abandoned that prototype early and promised people I'd work on it.

Long story short, I didn't until I got into StarMade again recently. I took it up again, made it better, independent of the limited medium that images provide. Instead of just classifying ships, I decided it would be a good idea to classify anything that might be of importance.

There have been many ship classification guides. Fewer turret classifications have been set up. As far as I know, no one has tried to categorize space stations. But is that all there's to the game? There are also planets and asteroids. Although they are not made by us, they may prove to be of significance in some situations. If they are of significance, we do need to communicate clearly, which is a clear indicator that we need a standard. A standard like mine, perhaps, which strives to take care of everything.

    After you completed the questions:
    • If you haven't been asked about your ship's stealth capabilites even though it can jam/cloak indefinitely, add "Stealth" as a prefix. For example, Bomber becomes Stealth Bomber.

    After you completed the questions:
    • If your station is the faction home, add "Home" as a prefix to the final word and remove any "Undefended" appearing in the name. For example, Undefended Shopping Bulwark becomes Home Shopping Bulwark.
    • If your station contains a shop module, add "Shopping" as a prefix to the final word. For example, Small Bulwark becomes Small Shopping Bulwark.

    • If your asteroid is the faction home, add "Home" as a prefix to the final word . For example, Mobile Merchant's Outpost becomes Mobile Merchant's Home Outpost.
IMPORTANT: Only planet segments can have shop modules, have turrets or be faction homes. This means you manually have to create some of these by blowing up a planet and using one of the segments.
IMPORTANT: Having a shop module counts as a structure, so a Mobile Merchant's Turret or Unharvested Merchant's Asteroid don't exist!

    1. Does your planet have turrets?

    More is coming!

    Feedback would be most welcome.

Remember: I'm not trying to force this down anyone's throat. I'm simply trying to offer an alternative to what's already there. Consider this an update to my earlier Flex-VCM.

Would you mind adding in a flowchart of sorts? (I think it was called a flowchart, maybe branching chart?) I personally get lost in all the spoiler tags, and would like to get an overview of it all.

Very creative I must say, thou I think most would stick to the usual navy classification names eg. Cruisers destroyers battleships

    @TwoNiner

Well, they're somewhere in there, I just needed it to be more detailed.

I'll post the flowchart and a listing of all the classes tomorrow, so things will become more clear.

Assuming you're talking about the flowcharts, I've spent most of the day on those so far. Making them for the ships will be time-consuming...

It's much easier for me to comprehend this now, Thank you~
And I must say, it's quite interesting indeed. While it might not be something that the average player uses (Most people seem to have their own classes iirc), I can see the benefit this has for factions for passing on intel of enemy assets (Militarized Planet with a Satellite Bulwark is much easier to convey than trying to describe it).

This is indeed a very clever and simple to use classification and is honestly the best I've seen so far. The names can also easily be changed for a custom classification.

I especially like the fact that it takes almost everything into account.

    Honestly, +1

I just added another poll option. Still working on the ship flowchart, after that I'll make a listing of all the classifications and descriptions for each class, so that you can easily look things up.

    EDIT:
I do want to ask people to post an explanation in the thread if they think a certain classification needs improvement.

A really good idea. I can see the direction you are going in and it will benefit the entire Starmade community, that is something to be proud of. Congrats on the great idea!

...So, my Avar-Kiaan-class Cruiser is a Basilisk by your system. Very interesting. The only thing is that the small station classification system is flawed, IMO. Not every light station that isn't a docking emplacement is a beacon or buoy by any means. Some are listening posts that are anything but beacons. Some are shuttle or cargo box depots. Some are small orbital "supermarkets," or occasionally holding facilities for cargo boxes (Or private shops that perform a similar duty).

    Etc.

The flowchart for the ships is coming along nicely. I'll likely change some of the mass requirements to be larger soon. Expect Planetoids/Star Carriers to become 500|000 and upwards.

    @Ithirahad
I'll take the suggestion into consideration. What exactly is a "listening post"? Shops are accounted for, but the cargo thing is a good idea.

Like, a surveillance station. Granted, we don't have any 'surveillance' tech yet, but in theory, it could work... I was just coming up with random examples of things that small space stations are in Sci-Fi.

So your scout frigate is over 100K mass? Does a titan of yours take up five sectors or something? :p
Turns out that frigate's actually going to be a destroyer, but yes. My cruiser is over 300K mass. I have no idea what my battlecarrier will be because finishing it will take so damn long.

My point is, something of mine that I didn't consider to be particularly big got assigned the class name used for asteroids and dwarf planets. And I found this amusing.
