you could just dock a core to the shipyard and build the ship from the core. make the shipyard dock hold the ship multiple blocks out instead of just .5 blocks so you can build all around the core. make it so that it updates every, say, 5 seconds to what the correct distance from the closest block is so you can keep building until you fill up the whole dock.
