I think that having a 'mission creation' and 'faction points' system would do amazing things for both servers and the singleplayer game.

something akin to the block editor, where you could go to 'mission office' or maybe even a shop, and recieve missions created by either you or the players. You would have to assign a difficulty to it based on how big/tough the enemies are, and a suggested size and/or armament level.

player-made missions could have cash/item rewards and/or gain faction points. The enemy ships/stations/strongpoints would be assigned by a mission editor, as would any npc ships like traders you have to escort, ship 'rewards', and factions you would LOSE points from by doing the mission (pirates don't like it when you blow up pirate ships or help the authorities raid pirate stations)

    types of missions:

Raid (faction) base: blow up the core of a pirate station or base at x,x,x

defeat (faction) ambush or raid shipping: defeat ships at x,x,x and/or turret emplacement

steal/kidnap/recover tech: defeat ship or station at x,x,x and recover mission item, bring item back to base

trade: take x of (common item) to station at x,x,x (same price as regular trade, but small faction bonus)

smuggle: take (mission item) to station at x,x,x, avoiding, outrunning, or defeating (faction) who will be trying to stop you. or bring item back from station, same difficulties.

escort: protect ship travelling at speed x (25?) enroute to x,x,x nearby station.if ship core makes it within (very reasonable time frame), mission success.

protect: protect (station, ship) in x,x,x from waves of (faction) enemies. waves spawn after player arrives in the sector. after a certain number of waves has spawned, and a reasonable time period without the protected object's core destroyed, mission success.

clear route: travel to x,x,x, destroying all waves of 'faction' that spawn.

join squadron: like other missions, except that you will have several NPC ships assisting you. rewards based on the number of npc ally ship cores that survive.

deliver ship: fly 'assigned' ship to x,x,x. you lose the ship when you arrive, big rewards.

establish colony: deliver several types of item, basic and mission, to a planet. when you eneter the planet's gravity well, the items are removed and you succeed.

establish station: build a station core at x,x,x. you must use (minimum number of blocks) and have x time to build. after X time is finished, (or you 'complete' the station to your satisfaction) station will be attacked by several waves of (faction). station core must survive.

deliver fleet: you must have a carrier of some sort (or be very good at flying), and deliver x number of (predesigned fighters) to x,x,x and launch fighters (or leave them floating). after delivery, attack waves begin as a 'bonus mission' which you can destroy or ignore.

ambush: you recieve a mission of another sort (no mission items or mission items are removed at the beginning of the ambush) but are attacked instead. This can be caused by the faction that gave the mission, or by an enemy faction that 'tricked' you. Success if you survive all the waves or destroy all enemy ships.

in addition, enemies could carry 'mission items' that can start a mission if they are enabled.

faction + means that the faction will give you higher-ranked missions, and certain structures/bonuses/items should be accessible only by having a high faction. This can be set by the player with the block editor or through the faction cube.

faction - can block certain purchases or bonuses or structures that belong to that faction, and at a certain level makes the player or player's faction 'at war' or KOS to that faction.

Missions can reward or subtract more than 1 faction.Note that the factions that give/remove missions should most likely be NPC factions only, as player factions go to war via roleplay or casual assault. although having player-added missions to faction structures COULD sincerely kick ass if given enough thought.
