So time and time again I join stagnate servers were all the factions do nothing but build and prepare for some far off and seemingly inevitable war. A war that comes in the form of trolls and edge picking passerbys.
Never have i seen a fleet drop out of warp on top of a home planet deep in enemy territory to meet the defending fleet head on. It just doesn't happen, but thats what you all are picturing happening when you build all your fortifications and flagships yea? But even on the most active servers all the factions turtle, not wanting to risk the hard earned fleet in aggressive combat.
Well what do we have to fight over? Glory and bragging rights, and some space chunks. Hardy worthwhile motivators to risk aggressive tactics.
So my proposal is, add some kind of expendable resource that is found in abundance only on some far and few in between systems. A resource that can be used on any ship without extensive refitting or be sold for extravagant prices on the market.
Overdrive fuel (I make ideas, not names, so idc what its called)
This fuel can make a systems group act like it is much larger without expending more energy, lets say for example 1.5*Block count for each injector attached. And will be used by activating Injectors connected to storage with logic.
The injectors will be placed directly on the system group and will supply fuel to any adjacent group that uses power while it is active.
The fuel will be expended based on how much energy is used to power the system group times the number of injectors at a rate of something like 1 unit of fuel per 100 units of energy used.
Its going to be expensive as hell to use fuel but i think it will scale well with ships.
Think about it,
A stealth ship when detected could dump fuel into thrusters for a quick escape.
A small bomber could could be outfitted with just enough Overdrive fuel to deliver a crushing tactical blow to an already weakened battleship.
A frigate could take cover behind another ship or asteroid and dump fuel into shield regeneration.
A dreadnought flagship dumps thousands of units of fuel into a doomsday cannon and vaporizes half a planet.
On the flip side, i think scanners should pick up the functionality of being able to detect this Overdrive fuel on other ships. This should allow players to be aware of any ships with overdrive fuel and plan accordingly.
We need something to fight over, something that isnt just money. Something that factions would fight over and i think this may be a step in that direction. It has been mentioned that relics and other meta items should be what we should fight over, i like the idea but i just dont see how anything like that would be useful beyond adding to factorys.
Edit; Perhaps we could slow the mining rate of these resources, or have it generated somehow. It would be way to op to be able to just gather it up quickly.
All of the things that i mentioned about its functionality would be useless and far too op if it didn't take a great deal of time for a faction to accumulate it.
