    Intro

So I have started making an EVE Themed Texture and i'm not going to lie to you, I am not very good at texturing. I'm stuck for the most part with Paint and i'm not very good even at that. The only thing in my advantage right now is the noise I have which makes it much easier on me as I don't have to color it pixel by pixel with tiny variations of color.

    Current Plan

The different color hulls will have different designs

Grey, Black and White = Caldari Themed Hull

Red Hard, Brown Hard, Yellow and Yellow Hard = Amarr Themed

Green, Blue and Purple = Gallente

For the Minmatar I will have the normal hull Red and Brown be there for them.

This setup also makes more since Roleplay speaking as Amarr are known for their hull and Minmatar are known for their Duck Tape ships :)

Similarly Shields will be look good on the exterior of Caldari Ships so they can have a shield boost without loosing style. Everything else is pretty much up in the air and will probably be un-themed.

    Current Progress

I have tested and fiddled with the Caldari Style Hull and currently have started on the Amarr Hull. I have Azur and Cru giving me advice if anyone else wants to help or give me a pointer that would be very welcome.

You should give GIMP a try. It will be overwhelming at first, but it will really make your life easier, starting with much better editing tools and layers.

Edit: The Black Hull looks strange. You should maybe think about less patches and making the texture tileable.

Making the hull continuous will really make it look better and a lot less choppy.

    Smoother lines (Without Noise)

    With Noise

I think this is a big step up and I will probably leave these two hulls alone for the time and move on to the Hard Hulls

Hard Hull. Designed to seem as if added above Normal Hull. I'm not sure if this is that close to Caldari Design though.

    No Noise

    With Noise

A nice side effect I have noticed about my Noise process is it really roughs up other textures

    Example

No, don't use noise on the Hardened Hull, the clean one looks much better. Noise generally doesn't look as good as doing the stain by hand. GIMP's brush tool (yes, it's a million times better than that one in Paint) does a great job in such cases.

What...? Nonsense, the 'noice' one looks better. The taint on the metal's nice.

The Hard Hull Noise is going to be cleaned up a bit. Certain parts look odd and blocky. I am going to let you choose wither you want Noise or not Noise.

    Noise will = Realistic

    No Noise will = Cartoon/Pixel

Now that the Caldari Hulls are atleast ok it is time to move on to the Amarr Hulls! :D
