Players should be able to buy/manufacture pistols/rifles for use in ship-invasion and ground-combat.

Perhaps a similar customisation system to the ship building?

Pistols and rifles would be a nice touch, but most of the game takes place ... you know, in space. Where the biggest gun rules supreme.
