This is my ship classification system. It assumes that your ship's longest dimesion is length.

    Ship classes with specific roles:

    Runabout
    -7x7x7 or less
    -unarmed
    -may have sheilding or armor
    -usually has plexstorages
    -very fast

    Interceptor
    -10-30 long
-main armanent is usually pure AMCs
-focuses on speed and firepower over sheilding

    Fighter
    -30-50 long
-may have missiles, but also mostly AMCs

    Bomber
    -40-70 long
    -focuses on missiles over AMCs
    -has heavy sheilding
    -sometimes has turrets for defense

    Heavy Fighter
    -50-70 long
    -focuses on AMCs over missiles
    -focuses on speed over sheilding
    -also may have turrets

Hybrids of fighters and bombers are always called fighter-bombers.

Ships with Non-specific roles. These ships can have multiple custom roles:

    Corvette
    -70-150 long

    Frigate
    -150-300 long

    Cruiser
    -300-400 long

    Battlecriuser
    -400-500 long

    Battleship
    -500-600 long

    Dreadnought
    -600-800 long

    Titan
    -800 or above

    Roles:

    Non-combat roles:

    Cargo
    -focuses on sheilds over firepower
-always has a large cargo bay

    Mining
-always has a large mining array
-focuses on sheilds and speed over firepower

    Personal transport
    -transports people
    -usually has a large interior
-rarely armed, and focuses on sheilds and speed over firepower.

    Combat roles:

    Destroyer
-designed to fight ships larger than itself
-focuses on ship-mounted firepower over sheilds
    -turrets are few but powerful
    -sometimes has missles

    Anti-fighter
-designed on take on large numbers of much smaller ships
-pure anti-fighters have a shotgun array and focuses on sheilds and speed over ship-mounted firepower
-turrets are many but are small and are equipped with shotguns rather than single large cannons

    Carrier
-focuses on sheilds over firepower. sometimes even unarmed
    -has powerful turrets
-designed to carry large numbers of smaller ships

The roles are made to be hybrided with classes and even mixed together. For example, you could have a destroyer corvette, or a carrier titan, or a mixture of both, or a frigate that is a mining-cargo-destroyer-carrier because it is focusing around all of those roles at once.

Hopefully this added a ruler to measure your ships with instead of adding lines for you to draw between.

What is it about length that automatically makes a 150-300m combat spaceship a space frigate? Or any other class you\'ve listed in there?

What do frigates do in space? What do destroyers do? What do corvettes do? What\'s the need for dedicated bombers when any spacecraft can fly in the direction of the target, detach a warhead and let it fly on its own towards it?
