I happenstanced over this game when I saw the latest Greenlit games, and thought to myself that out of the entire bunch this was the only one worth looking into, but I would wait till it came out on steam.
But then, I'd been in a gaming funk for nigh on two weeks now, so the next day I decided to go ahead and download the game, and boy what a good idea that was.
I honestly haven't been stunned by a game for awhile, not by any recent AAA titles and not by any indie titles (All those 20 dollar + alpha's make me laugh...)
Anyways, after the tutorial (actually USEFUL, which many alphas/indie games fail to do I'm looking at you Kerbal Space Program) I decided to go ahead and see what the purchase price would be....
Three bucks.
Sold.
I respect developers more that don't try to charge and even over charge for access to unfinished games (Planetary Anihilation) or even try a farce for selling a game as finished (Towns) but Starmade seems to be taking the same path as Minecraft with its build up from alpha to beta to release. And while I never really did get much into Minecraft (I dun did died to often), I respected the buiseness model they went through.
Overall, from my hour of play so far, it seems to be there is a small learning curve to the surface of the game that is easy to grasp (thanks to the tutorial) followed by a much deeper, more indepth play that can fill more hours than Runescape. Well, not quite.
I'm hoping that the game will develop to be able to mimic something similar to EVE online, without the years of workup to the larger ships (I've never played EVE but I've looked into it). That is to say, that it would be possible to create titan class ships, that have many facilities and weapons/ power unique to ships that sizes, while being rare enough to not make the small ships useless.
I think to end my rambling, I'll say I have high hopes for an extremely polished StarMade for the years to come, that it becomes as popular (Or more!) than MineCraft (Even though they are two completely different games, people won't get over the 'all things Voxel are Minecaft clones' mindset) whilst beating out the incredible deluge of Voxel games popping up (Then again, they DO have a point with all these voxel games coming out).
Now, I'm going to go and figure out how to earn credits and find new stores in the game to create the biggest baddest noobiest ship there is!
PS: I learned it was a bad idea to piss off the shop ship, but I took revenge from death and started breaking down one of the Trader Fleets ships with meh bare hands! Till it flew off =(
Remember, the enemy's gate is down.
