Email notifications telling you about new releases and launcher updates would be really useful. Especially new Launcher versions as otherwise if you don't go on the site much you maybe won't know that there is a new Launcher and might not check for a new Launcher using the feature in the Launcher.

The launcher will call home itself at startup and let you know of a new update to it, and download it if you click yes.

All of this is already implemented. As rimmer correctly stated, the launcher will inform you about updates.
You can stay informed about game updates by subscribing to the RSS feed or by using the "Watch Forum" function. For the latter, navigate to the Game News forum and click Watch Forum. There, check "Email" and submit. That's it, you will receive an Email as soon as a new thread is posted there. Those may be about something else than game updates only, but it's the primary purpose.
