I've been kicking around a sort of 'how to do this?' for a while for drones and I have a suggestion for docking -
Make it so that if you couple an area trigger of some sort with an area control and tie that to docks, any ship that enters into the area will dock onto the smallest available dock.
that way AI can be set to 'return to dock' when enemies are gone.
