Do planets generate their type by range to star, or is it random?

Are planet types determined by the distance to a nearby star or if it completly random? Like, if I go to a planet closer to a star will planets generated be desert/volcano worlds and planets further away are ice worlds with earth worlds being in the middle or does it not matter?



I ask mainly since I wanna know where I can get desert worlds.

I have found patterns but they might be counidences...
