I haven't seen this one in a long while, so I thought I'd give the idea a poke.

I'd like to be able to create custom player models for alien avatars. For example, one of these critters:

Why do we all have to be humanoids? :(

Even having multiple default skins to choose from would be a nice touch for people that don't have the graphical ability to make their own, and it'd also mean that they wouldn't have to be uploaded to the server.

Non-humanoid alien models could be kinda neat I guess. They should probably still fit in the same dimensions or else there could be issues, and would need to have hands and the ability to sit, so Daleks/R2D2 and Liir space dolphins are probably out of the running.

Hands or similar appendages are a given. Sitting may take some creativity, but for example you have the four-legged part of the above creature sit in a chair in the same fashion as a cat or dog, or with the front legs on the floor. Whichever reaches the console or table better. (In the current game, the former would fit better because Dave is too short to sit at meter-high tables.)

ye different player models to choose from (provided by schine) would be cool. Perhaps even make it possible for a slider to change your height/muscularity. Not too extreme though, lol like arc surviavl evolved.

    ...YES. :ayylmao: :morewink: :neko:

Being a 3D animation grad, I've already made a few custom skins but given the chance, I'd also like to be able to make my own character and equipment models then load them into the game.

There's nothing like building a custom asset, whipping out a can of Photoshop and going full custom...

What I really want is the ability to create models and skins for NPC crew, then equip them with advanced shop weapons. I'd post snipers of different races wearing Star Axis personal armor near every station entrance.

Could someone make a super high poly model? Because aside from looking ugly as, I think it'll set my computer on fire.

How about just start with a female character choice
Agreed insofar as there should be a default female skin provided with the game (kupu?).

However, as far as a female character model, I don't think StarMade would benefit from that. Unless the character model(s) become way more realistic, I think changing the character skin does the job well enough.
In my opinion, higher definition models would clash with the art style of StarMade, and cubic-meter-voxel games in general, and break immersion more than add to it.
Skins serve that purpose much better. There are already quite a few excellent ones in the community content section, look for ephla442's and AnnaShade017's (hope they are both doing fine, haven't seen much of either of them lately).

I do hope we get support for truly alien creatures at some point, not just "humans in rubber masks".
Somewhat related: Play as different races for a more general discussion about "humanoid" and other aliens.

I'd like to to see their templates for the character mesh and skeleton. It would be cool if we; the players could custom build our own player models from scratch. Using something like 3DS Max, Maya or Blender, you could do something as simple as add ears and a tail for a cat-person, or go full Master of Orion/Star Control and make dinosaurs, insectoids, octopus people, flying mushroom-jellyfish, etc.

At the very least, allow for an 'edit mesh' (as in 3DS Max) option for the character model. Allow us to move vertices on the default model to change its body size, thickness and proportions but keep the same texture mapping coordinates. You could easily make a slimmer, more muscular or female shape with that method.

Hell; I don't even want Schine to build it for us, just give me the means to edit the skins and the models. That would keep me busy while they do this power revamp.

The game has model data in this location:

    Your StarMade folder\data\models\

There are then five sub folders. The character folder even has something that looks like what the OP requested called a Hoppy. Though I think it was intended to be a creature for the desert planet.

    hoppy_desert.png

Some small guide is found in:

    Your StarMade folder\data\config\animationDocumentation.txt

mainConfig.xml is then used for the Entity Configuration.

    For astronaut skinning look here:

    Your StarMade folder\data\SkinningResources\

    and here

    Your StarMade folder\data\image-resource\

    playertex.png

There maybe other files it really pays off to browse through all of StarMades many sub directories. Lots of stuff everywhere.

I appreciate you posting this; no doubt many will find it useful.

I already make my own skins but the model info may be what I'm looking for. I'm going to try to import one into a 3D application, alter it, then import it back into the game.

Let's see how much of my training I remember...

    Nice...

Looks like Arnie and Xeno had a fling in the mid 80s; some time between Aliens and Terminator. That guy gets around even more than I thought. o_O

On a somewhat related topic, what about custom player hat models? Maybe it's the TF2 player in me talking, but a boring 'ol square helmet just doesn't do it for me. You just can't do a proper military uniform without something like a proper peaked cap!
