Creating and using Skins?

Since the launcher of Starmade changed a couple of years ago, the tutorials for changing skins seem to have become obsolete. That being said, there are folders in the game files for local and server skins, so I presume this is still possible. Where does one find templates for making skins, and how do they get uploaded into the game?

In the settings there is an option to create a skin from images and to select a skin to use. The .smskin file is also just a .zip so it can be opened like an archive.

There is also a skin generator which seems to still work, I used this as the base of my skin before modifying it myself.
