Can we scrap enhancers already?

Keep Enhancers or use a GUI layout?

Instead of docking areas working as big green boxes, the possibility of docking should be based on ships mass.

This way we perfectly know if we could dock specific ship, get rid of green/blue boxes and still have balanced system
That presents a lot of possible collision issues though, as long as you don't build overlapping docks the current system will always make sure a ship can dock inside the green bounding box. If there was just a simple mass check than you can run into problems where you clip into the mothership/station when docking. For this to be feasible the docking beam would also have to be scrapped in favor of docking by proxy when you can only dock when you position your ship correctly and that presents many challenges as well such as proper ship to ship alignment.

Enhancers are not needed, any ship any size should be able to dock to any docking module - as long as it doesn't collide/touch anything in the docking area.

Well there can are simple solutions for that:

    1) before "jumping" to dock there can be run a quick test if this ship would have enough room, so there won't be any collisions. If the ship is too big, then docking is not possible.
So the limiting factor here wouldn't be green boundaries but surroundings of the dock

    2) the direction in which the ship would be orientated could be determined by the orientation of docking module.

So.. You wouldn't mind a humongous titan docking onto a 5 block homebase with faction invincibility.
We need enhancers and other support blocks, if only to balance this kind of stuff.

    That sounds interesting.
Working off what you just said, here's a proposal: Docking enhancers now have 7 orientations - one for each face and one "null." Null enhancers work like all current enhancers, but if you place an oriented enhancer it will increase the docking box in that direction by 2.
    Nice. I like that.

well technically that is possible in space

It is also game-imbalancing. That's why we need some form of enhancers.

but why - what's the point of making this aspect more tideous?

That is why we need some form of limitation, and enhancers are the most intuituve system we have. Using a GUI would require less sacrifice of ship capability, and just removing it would be completely OP.

It is fully possible in space, but just tell me - how is it OP to have a five block station attach a giant ship, what is it that it makes unbalanced in game?

The invincibility of docked items. That you can quickly set up a 5 block station and dock a titan to it, and make it completely invincible, anywhere, by setting faction homebase.

I think it is not an either or.

Just change the limit to mass, not size and require a docking area dependent on the size of the docking ship.

I'm leaning towards mass based enhancer blocks rather than dimensional enhancers.
That way you could just dedicate, say, a 3x3x3 area to docking enhancers beneath your mid size turrets, or something.

Get rid of boxdim enhancers so we can dock things as long as they wouldn't collide with the ship or its other docked objects. That way we'd be able to make more interesting turrets and docking ports. c:

but how will that effect gameplay? performance/lag?

It effects the actual playing of the game, as in, it would be an 'overpowered' mechanic.
One moment, you're fighting someone in a titan, possibly beating them, the next, they've set down a 5 block station and you can no longer touch them. That this makes for broken gameplay, should be quite clear.
Once stations no longer make the ships docked to them invincible, this idea could be revisited. But currently the docking enhancers are a thing we need to prevent this blatant type of abuse.

In general, I'm against making a single block so powerful, that it could allow any object to dock with it. The necessity for supporting systems promotes expanding a docking area and decorating it, somewhat.

Also, if you remove average docking enhancers, then what about turret docking enhancers..? Should you be allowed to dock any size of turret to any size of ship? Do you believe this type of thing wouldn't simply break the game even further, and promote people to dock ridiculously large turrets to tiny ships?

Keep enhancers. Possibly rework them to consider mass, in stead of dimensions.. But keep them.

I guess you have a point, people could have many home stations with faction permission modules to let any titan able to find a "safe spot".

In the new update, you might be able to have more than one base costing alot of faction points. So yea that might work, but then you gotta pay to protect that titan

I thought more of scrapping docking modules and keep enhancers + give target enhancer of a docking beam docking block abilities.
That would remove 1 block from the shop and inventories - you can prevent the usage of wrong docking spots by decorating the outside.

hmmm, so you can dock to any module in the grouping, probably not best, how about the only odd faced enhancer is the only you go to. So you make a flat landing spot. Inside the blocks is the enhancers. 1 has an orientation "up" and it would turn a darker green maybe and be the one you use.
