This is Multiplayer related. It doesn't happen in Singleplayer mode.
While in build mode, if you got e.g. 5 "hardened Hull", you place them QUICKLY in a straight line in front of you and you pick them up easy-easy, you will have placed more than 5, maybe 7-8 so, you will be able to have easily lots of blocks (which if you sell them you become rich!).
Something like this:

This probably happens because of lag.
I've done it once or twice but I don't like this. It's unfair and the game loses the character of finding materials.
