Just an idea:
what you do is have the docking module much higher and farther away from the station. On the ship you have about a 3x3 hollow tube. You fly ship up to above it, lower down so module goes through. Then you might want a passage going another direction for defence but your choice. The tube would be about halfway the maximum docking beam distance, maybe 3/4. Easy docking
