Beveled slabs for fine detail

Is this the simplest and most workable solution for fine-detail yet?

    • Ya Luk...you totally nailed it !

    • Grudgingly agree with idea mostly stolen from craftier members on the Dock.

    • No, I like my fighter's blockey thanks.

*(Inspired by the many posts about mini-blocks, micro-blocks, fighters-detail etc.)

I believe this is a solution for increasing detail that works, although it does use up Block-IDs.

Slabs...with beveled edges! [Edges angled at 45 degrees]

A multi-stack for armour & hull. You would want the following variants (of the thinnest slab):
    -Beveled one side.
    -Beveled opposite sides.
    -Beveled two sides at right-angle.
    -Beveled three sides.
    -Beveled on all four.

These additions would add tremendously to the finer detailing of small ships.

Except that they are 5 blocks which take up 3-4 amrour classes for all colours = 150 IDs.
    11 ID bits are 2048 IDs, 150 are ~7-8%

Like, but before this happens, I want a better inventory management.
hold down SPACE to rotate the primary face (bottom) and ALT to rotate the secondary face of the block you see.
Pressing N (not nav while building) could apply that rotation to other blocks.
Because like now it's exhausting to cycle through 12 combinations on average for placing every block.
I am happy that I can use full blocks before the final polishing.

Still not sold on the idea. It's overly complex and adds very little to the game compared to the amount of work they would require to implement.

Good, but it's going to require 4 bytes per block. Once you go to 4 bytes you might as well add half slabs and quater slabs also, as they'll also fit in 4 bytes.

This would also help soften interiors. Fewer 90 degree angles for astronauts to cut their suits on.

    How about this compromise:

Replace the existing mini-slab with a beveled version. Would this eliminate the need for new Block-IDs...

Only if you are satisfied with just one colour of these.
It may help if we know a bit more how the rendering steps between the ID-information and picture of the block. Do more IDs add rendering steps? Or just use of existing ones with different data?

    New textures add more data.
    New side-cases add more steps.
Using existing side-cases in a more flexible way does not make rendering slower.

    How about no?

It would make a lot of stuff that uses these slabs look bizare and take away possibilities for designing ships.

Yeah, and ruin all my existing builds?
