I think this would be a good way to make crews more interesting.
Boarding
with the recent updates encouraging boarding i am assuming this is planned but just in case this is how i think it would work. first you send your crew to their ship, ducking and weaving between turrets to get close enough for them to grapple, your crew starts to cut into their ship if you have more than one they try to stay together. your crew use a radar to scan the local area of the ship that is around them, this highlights themselves (plus any other NPCs) and blocks around them that they can directly "see".
now it is time to take over the ship! you can't control the boarding crew directly but you can issue "orders"
some examples i have are:
drain: a bit like the power drain beam but the crew do it (they can also drain shields)
Damage: your crew tries to do as much damage to the ship hp as possible (mainly attacking systems) this is most effective with weapons such as the rocket launcher.
Attack <system>: simple pick a system and your crew looks for and kills a system (computer).
ABORT: get out of there, your crew runs away and tries to get to your ship.
