So, I haven't been able to find any good servers for just building ships with friends while we are unable to play the game itself. What is ,in your mind, the best place to rent a server?

I have had stellar performance and customer service from TheSmelter.com. Check out Tethys Galaxy server for an example.

I second that, haven't tried a starmade server from Multiplay yet, but their pricing is usually good with some excellent discounts occasionally. Customer service, reliability and administrative control panels are all great too.

It all depends on how much experience you have with running servers, if you know how to do it you can rent servers pretty cheap

if you don't know anything about it you might want to go to a managed server provider, and those are more expensive

Good point, renting server space and manually running your server can be a lot cheaper.

This does require a lot more know-how and work on the owner's part however, whereas server providers usually take care of everything for you, usually requiring little more than a setting or two to be modified on your part to tweak the server to your liking.

Go for manual if you want to save some money or feel like taking on a bit of a challenge, go for server providers if you just want a quick place to play for friends.

Because my PC is a pile of junk and I've not got around to building my new system I rented a server to take the pressure of my machine. A multiplay 10 person server is £6.50 a month. The management console is easy to use and you can access the config files. If you want it private don't list it and lock it down.

I was thinking of running my own Starmade server in fact. My pc is powerful, but I don't want to spend the ram that I use making videos.

Depends on the power you want. If you want high spec, then the manual root is better, but for low power, cheap servers, I recommend pingperfect.

I had a very good time while i rented at http://jestservers.com/

One of the most notible things was the very friendly and active ticket support that actually tried to do something and not just close the ticket ASAP.

    I've got experience from renting starmade + minecraft servers at other hosts, so i know the difference in ticket support quality. ^^;

i don't think the slots system works very well for starmade, amount of people online is only very slightly related to server perfromance

Only because in its alpha stage, the game isn't very optimised. It will be worked on :)

That'll be years though so mentioning "slots" right now really means nothing
With PingPerfect, the slots system is purely dictating how much RAM you get. RAM is where the ships are stored when the server is running. More players = more ships. More ships you need more RAM. so more players = more ram. Thats why they use slots.

Hope that helped you out :)

ram is not important for starmade at all, the amount of ram it uses is pretty random: sometimes it uses 5 gigs with ~40 people on, and other times it is capped out at 24 when there are 15...

Whilst that is mostly true the general rule is more players means more ram needed. Thats the best way of making sure people only pay for what they need that we could think of without defaulting to a pay x for y amount of ram.

If you can think of another way of doing it we will be more than happy to listen to your suggestions

First thing i'd do is not offer 100 slot servers, there is no way, no matter the hardware, you can guarantee 100 slots.

Also disclosing the hardware the servers are actually ran on would be nice

The hardware spec's used to be on the old thread, thanks for reminding me.
We have actually had 75 people playing on a server at the same time without issue (Granted it was a lan only server and there wasn't a huge amount going on but there were no issues running it)

As mentioned the "Slots" really only means Ram, The minimum slot count will net you 1GB of ram with ever additional 10 slots giving you another 512MB ram, so a 100 "Slot" server would be how ever many people you can fit into a server running with 5GB ram (it is possible to increase the ram without increasing the slot count and go beyond the 5GB current limit but that requires a support ticket. On the flip side of that with a support ticket we can increase the "Slot count" on any server to whatever you want, you could if you wanted to have a 1GB server with 2000 slots (not that you would get anywhere near that) We may go to a pay for x amount of ram system at a later date but this is working fine for the moment and isn't causing us any issues, or anyone else for that matter so there is no urgency to change it)
