So here's a thought that's been rattling around in my head for a while: Battlergoups!
In essence, a Battlegroup would be a smaller fleet inside of another fleet. So let's say your fleet consists of a group of fighters with it's carrier, two battleships, and your main destroyer. With Battlegroups, you would be able to mobilize all these ships to attack a specific location (such as a station). When you got there, you could command your Fighter Battlegroup to attack the station while you have your Battleship Battlegroup stay in formation around your destroyer. Perhaps you could even issue a command for your Battleship Battlegroup to only attack other vessels that are moving to engage your main destroyer(Should that order exist in the future).
There are other uses for this as well. Let's say one of your other fleets is under attack in another sector. If you have a spare Battlegroup sitting around, you could easily just transfer that spare group to the other fleet. The ships in that spare Battlegroup will break off and go reinforce the fleet you've sent them to.
But wait! What happens if one of your stations comes under attack? What would you do then when your Battlegroups are spread thin across a sector? It's simple, actually. Your fleet still acts like a fleet! All you would need to do is issue a "Defend this Sector" command to your Fleet and all the BattleGroups in that fleet will go fight off the attackers where you send them. After the battle, you can assign your Battlegroups back to their previous stations in the fleet and move the whole unit around as usual.
As the game develops and more combat orders become available, I think this function will become exponentially more useful.
Tl;DR - This will let you to group together and issue orders to multiple ships at once inside one of your fleets.
