If Schine couldn't support an artist to create music then there wouldn't have been a call for artists to submit their work. Just because we are indie doesn't mean we are scraping by :)
From the submissions you've heard, is the soundtrack going to turn out more Space Engineers style (actiony theatrical music that doesn't fit at all) or more like EVE Online's style (calm ambient spacey music that fits)? :P

I believe we asked for orchestral music. Something akin to the ST for Interstellar. Not as grandiose obviously. It will vary based on location and situation as well.

You know, I bet that there are a number of people who would do a soundtrack for free or nearly free.
I'm pretty much one of them, because making a name has a bigger priority than making money for me right now, it's probably going to be the same for other musicians that just started producing stuff for other media. Having a good portfolio with fairly big titles in them is going to help a lot with convincing other companies of your abilities, so when I see opportunities like that I take them.. Such as with the new Unreal Tournament.

This is what I had submitted for starmade (pretty much without having a clue of what type of music they wanted because they were so vague):
    - For space: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/51891186/StarMade_Music/Odyssey.mp3
    - For planet: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/51891186/StarMade_Music/StarMade_Ambient_1.mp3
    - Space as well: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/51891186/StarMade/StarMade-Final.mp3
    - Pirates: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/51891186/Celestial Hunt.mp3

If they had given a better indication of what type of music they wanted (such as posting that link to the soundtrack of interstellaria) I would've been able to get much closer to the mark, I'm a very flexible producer... Right now I feel they have judged the submissions based on the personal taste/take of the producers themselves rather than judging them on their ability to produce, which is honestly not significant.

Just to back my flexibility statement, this is what I've done for some other games and stuff:
    - https://soundcloud.com/deshaadman/dissolution-concept-for-ut4
    - https://soundcloud.com/deshaadman/orchestral-improvisation
    - https://soundcloud.com/deshaadman/retroclash-ingame-track-3

I guess I'm just salty with the fact that they did not pick me, because I've been showing interest for almost two-three years now in producing the game's soundtrack, and people liked my direction a lot on the forums, as evident here:
    - http://starmadedock.net/threads/archers-music-concepts-for-starmade.3719/

It feels like a bit of a stab in the back, so I guess things have changed then.

I explained in length why I would prefer a game with no soundtrack, but good quality assurance, over a game with a soundtrack and a lot of bugs, like the way most of the games today are, sadly. If you are hearing hate, I'd suggest you start asking yourself where that is coming from.

I could have posted a simple "Nope, don't like", but instead chose to lay out my arguments, without any "hate". I know a lot of people do want a soundtrack, it's just something I don't understand why.

I'd rather see another coder fixing bugs and implementing features over a soundtrack I'll listen to once at most. Simple as that.
agreed features above soundtrack, luckily they don't have to do much for the soundtrack.
also, the reason why first person shooters don't have soundtracks: the constant action with pew pew grenade! boom is enough to kill all awkward silences.

yes, you saw it right, I heard hate, hate for soundtracks. now I see it is a preference for features/bug fixing :D
