Asymmetrical Ships (Commonplace and Compatibilty)

Are asymmetrical ships normal? I have been on the forums here for awhile and in all honesty, I have only seen 2 or 3 truly asymmetrical ships. One of which being my own. I was wondering, other then looks, how do you, the community, see these ships?

1: Are they practical?

2: Is it worth the time?

3: Does it decrease the available space drastically?

4: Does it add something regular ships do not?

Edit: Also, do it effect the ships thrust or make it off kilter when flying?

1. From my experience, they are no more or less practical than any other ship, just a matter of preference.

2. I\'ve built a couple asummetrical fighters, which isn\'t a problem, but it really depends on the size.

3. Depends on the shape and size.

4. Nothing. just a matter of preference.

5. As of now, thrust powers the ship the same regardless of positioning, one could have thrusters only on a long arm and the ship would still fly straight. Not to say, however, that thruster balancing won\'t be implemented at some point.

1: It really depends on the ship, but since turning speed is mostly based off of dimensions, They usually are not.

2: If you can make them look nice then yes they are.

4:Besides looking really cool they do not.

Usually I plan my ships symetric, because it is faster.

Although some things are always asymetric - 3D cross joints with more than 1 strip for example.

I think the only questions are:

• Do you have the time for it and like it?
• Can you dock/fly with it without crashing the longer side into an asteroid?
• Are you skilled enough to build efficient interior for it?
