I'll just throw this idea out there as a discussion starter:
I can imagine a great way of incorporating music in the game in the best way possible. The idea would basically be similar to what Bethesda does in the Elder Scrolls and Fallout series: Ambient non-intrusive background music in high volume (just look at the Skyrim soundtrack, there's 3 hours of this Ambient stuff), which would obviously be more Space-esque, punctuated with "Battle" music that appears when an enemy target signature enters your sector. When the battle is over, the music seamlessly transitions back to the ambient background music.
