Alliances?

So I've been wondering. I've allied myself with a few other factions on the server I play on and, beyond making their navigation diamonds green, what does this actually do? Does it prevent attacks from them causing me to declare war when I have declare war upon hostile action set? Can they open my doors/plexstorages, etc. or dock on faction ships/stations? I'm assuming, at the maximum, they would have the permissions of a faction member with all permissions boxes unchecked, so I'm not afraid of them touching my faction modules/editing my base or anything like that. So what can they do?
