What if there was a Red, Blue, Green, creature simulation on each of the according planet types? Have them behave on timers per technology they research before they enter space. Red is weak against Blue, Blue against Green, etc. Maybe start out as caveman level with 100 small creatures, then medium (50), then player character size (25). But before I go any further, what if you gave us the player the ability to create each style of creature and eventually ships.
It could have influence effects. Perhaps you land and steal (potential Pirate Quest) that technology, causing a crime against the ancient alien that stole it, making that civilization's goal in space is to hunt you down, following your path later on in the game that could potentially disrupt another civilization's goal. ie. Red chases you to Green takes over sending more after a Blue planet you visiting creating a War in the Sector.
Or you land and ally with the Red creatures by giving them the technology they are researching and start spreading seeds of Peace. Allied Planet's become Trading Guild Shops.
I think this alone could create a whole new feeling of immersion. What say you?
