based on all the stuff thats been added, im sure we can safely assume that schema will "figure something out". as a rule of thumb iv been building everything with the assumption that eventually there will be some kind of air/pressurization mechanic. and that fluids will eventually flow.

so that means never leave open holes in a ship. (or at least its vital parts) always build air locks to enter a ship or station. and always put fluids (lava/water) in a manner that wouldn't be catastrophic should it ever flow, like a well, fountain or tank. (in a gravity enabled environment of course)

both things are confirmed so they will be coming in some form eventually. well see what the great grey one comes up with.

Since Starmade is mostly space, suppose we consider air as an item, with its own block ID and metadata. Each planet has an upper limit that assigns air blocks above the ground and stops when it reaches the edge of the atmosphere, say, 15-20 blocks.

And I've always had this idea of adding oxygen tanks to Starmade. Each ship has an oxygen tank or a similar module, and feeds oxygen to each room via a filter or vent. Not only will these filters fill the ship with oxygen, but will also detect holes in the room they were assigned to. When a hole is detected. the room 'decompresses', and all oxygen is cut off to simulate that decompression.

Of course doors might be considered holes, but it just means leaving them out in the filter's area of detection. How that can be achieved, I don't know. But, it's an idea nonetheless.

I just had the vision of a player getting sucked out of his ship by a hull breach, that would be pretty damn funny to watch.

You may want to check out how the Galacticraft mod for minecraft works, I have used it it and somehow it is able to check if the space in a space station is sealed and then fill that space with air. It is also open source so, https://github.com/micdoodle8/Galacticraft/
GC's system isn't fully applicable to SM though.
    1. If a room is too big, it will be seen as outer space.
    2. If a room is just below the limit mentioned in 1, it creates lag on less powerful computers.
