I have seen few well built engineering decks in SM-Youtube channels

You not only need a ceiling, it also has to hide 1 layer of blocks and up to three meters on a cross-section.
While a real room needs 5 blocks in height, engineering decks need 3.

If you leave the conduits visible and decorate them, bonus points!

This is why I believe they need to be connected by conduits. Plus I'd like the challenge of figuring out how to run conduits through the ship.
I would love to see multiple layers of overlapping systems in the end.

A network of reactor conduits connected to core systems (thrusters, weapons, shields, etc) it powers,

Overlapped by / interwoven with a network of crew compartments adjacent to or incorporating elements of the core systems they service,

Overlapped perhaps by other interdependent networks as time goes on.

Good luck making stick ships out of layered meshes of interconnected systems, some with spacing constraints.

Navigating the complexity of successfully engineering a powerful, effective, and attractive ships has always been one of the biggest draws of Starmade for me.

Ideally, it shouldn't be that hard to make something that looks good and functions pretty well, but it should be hard to fully optimize something. That's what makes optimization fun and rewarding.
