First, make the color of the object not matter - if it needs hull, any hull color will do. This is realistic and takes a lot of pain out of the process.
Second, roughly balance the cost of the materials against the cost of the output - L5 and faction modules should take a lot of materials to make, and they should make a lot of the product if they are an ingredient. This makes recipies bad or good mostly based on what the materials are, not their cost.
