As far as I know, you still need cannons for anti-missile turrets. Smaller turrets don't need a lot of damage per shot, so if you are going anti-missile, you probably need to go with cannons.

I fully agree. This is basically how the Quake games got their NPCs moving (invisible waypoints in the map data) when not under the control of player-hunting AI routines. If it's good enough for pre-Diakatana John Romero, it's good enough for me.

On the contrary, I would think that it would be valuable to respawn asteroids, especially near a homebase. Without respawning, transportation time takes longer and longer and longer, until you finally have to move your base to get anything substantial built.
