You can add a turret to your salvage drones. One so the entity count doesn't skyrocket. The fleet will than have multiple turrets to defend it self.
The game has got more beefy over time. I used to play it at 1920x1080 but have dropped down to 1366x768. Some updates try to address this by bringing performance enhancing features. But overall it just takes more cpu power to run the game.

The barrel part of the turret needs enough energy stored to fire. Your turret was small so i figured it didn't need any. It does share power with the main ship it's docked to. Nice work you now have working turrets!
You may need to add a faction module to your own ship and set it to owner if you were not in a faction before. So the ship and turret get your faction flag. Since you are using a faction command to set hostile.

Spawn a core in shooting range of the turret add a bobby ai and turn it on.
Now look in your factions menu "make one if you are not in one" and select Neutral is Hostile. The turret should fire at it.
It sounds nice but then Nomade type players that rely on the big emptieness of space can no longer hide anywhere. A Home Base is already kinda mandatory. With this it would be near totally impossible to play without a Home Base.

Create a new world no need to delete your existing one. Admin spawn a ship using the admin tab on the catalog window. Move a few sectors logout and restart the game. Log back in and report back on how things behave.
Cannon + Missile AMS Turrets get pretty close. The large turret on the Derelict ETA Stations is a 3K CM Flak shooter. Try poking it! It will react be prepared to take serious damage.
