I think he used commands to remove the core. The planet and the center shouldn't be the same thing. It is either a station or a ship.
Although it doesn't really matter how he did it. It's the fact that he did it that counts.
Not with damage beams and missiles there's not. It might not even apply to the cannons anymore. It was part of the old system, so it might not be like that anymore.
The problem with the turrets now just is that they don't know when to stop clipping. They even clip through completely sometimes. Just think of that time when a pirate station turret went completely through the station and killed you (happened to me). The clipping system is simple and effective...

One thing that is inevitably going to be implemented is a way to conquer galaxies. Factions will try to claim as many as possible, and really, really, really big wars will be thought (hopefully). And, as I said:

I think it would help to make planets bigger by making the hame recognise it as one entity. That way the occlusion culling that was recently added could help a lot more when near planets, since it won't load the back of the planet then.
