I like this but we might want to wait until npcs. I've been tossing the idea around of a planetary conquest tournament. Two Planets each have a fleet first to capture the planet wins.
No dimming that I know of. You could play with turning lighs on and off closer and farther from the outside of the sphere though.
It may give you a dimming effect!
Find and replace works but not really for the AI players. We do have a find and replace tool in the advanced build section. If you are on your own server its pretty easy to change the max size to 100 and find replace everything, but it doesn't leave connections as far as I know. Its much easier...

To also follow up, I'd love if when you selected one ship they managed to show which custom actions they had. Allowing things like massive alpha strikes or launching all drones.
The reason I like giving astrotech computers the ablility to place blocks, is so in the long run I can take a blueprint and tell the AI to go build it in a location. So you could build out large sections of your empire in the background kinda like an RTS but on a much longer time scale.
