If you want combat capability over looks, interiors must be built first with a clear and specific goal. EG The ship MUST have X amount of AMC, Y amount of shieds with enough power to power it for Z seconds. It must have \"A\" amount of thrust. Notice all the \"musts\"? Once you are done...
