I fail to see what's unintuitive about making a logic clock and attaching it to a couple of jumpdrives.

The integrity would be bad. It works off open faces, and in your arrangement all the side blocks will have at least 2 open faces. Compare this with a cube, where the only blocks that have 2 or more are the very edge blocks.
