      I've suggested auto-uncloak on getting hit in my system as well, just after three instead of one hit. Essentially, when you hit the shield, you still see the animation of that (just without the ship uncloaking), so at least you know you hit "something". Then after the third hit, it uncloaks...

      I think discouraging "ugly" builds is a whole shoe for itself, but forcing us to always have thrusters on the outside might definitely hurt the game.       I personally prefer a more predictable system where we can more or less estimate "Those two ships are of equal size, they'll jump equally far", simply for reasons of directions of player flow on servers, the galaxy exploration part in general, etc., and I think long-range travel should work...
