I think the game would be much more interesting if in galaxies, both the trading guild and pirates would have chunks of territory belonging to them in a galaxy.

    Neutral Space
Neutral space would be like what space is like now. However, there would be an even number of pirate stations and trading guild stations. In addition, stations would be less common.

    Trading Guild Territory

Trading guild territory is basically a safehaven for players. The systems would be swarming with trading guild ships, have twice as many shops, and the only pirate stations in the territory would be around the very edge. Trading guild systems would appear light blue

    Pirate Territory

Pirate territory would be a very hard place to survive in. Pirates would be sending more ships out at you every few minutes, pirate stations would be as common as they are now, and no trading guild stations. Derelicts also become slightly more common. The deeper you go into pirate territory, the more hostile it gets. Pirate systems would appear red.

    Warzone

The warzone is the hardest place to live in. It would replace trading guild/pirate sectors around the edges when the 2 territories start colliding. Both pirate and trading guild stations would be bustling with activity, always sending out new ships to attack the opposing guild. Normal shops in these systems become inactive. Advanced shops would get a small defending fleet of trading guild ships. Warzone territories would appear orange.

    Spreading

From the beginning, the pirates and trading guild would each get one sector somewhere in the starting galaxy. From there on, they start spreading out. In the first 2 hours of gameplay, they would spread super fast, taking on average 1 new system every 5 minutes. Afterwards, they would take a new system on average every 1-2 hours. To take back territory from a pirate or from the trading guild, you would have to attack a certain station called the "TG Faction Station" or "Pirate Faction Station" which they would build to claim the territory. Every claimed piece of territory would have one of these stations. They would be heavily armed, and be several times stronger than any station currently in game. Both the trading guild and pirates would favor system types more than others. They would tend to spread towards wormholes if there's any within 10 sectors. Wormholes would allow them to spread out more by giving them a second chunk of territory wherever that wormhole leads. The would prefer star systems over void systems. If they only have void systems left. They would spread there. If you don't want spreading, you would be able to turn it off in the config.

What could I do with this?
Well, when you become able to create fleets with bobby AI, you would likely be able to do stuff like cause mass destruction to pirate territory, by sending several bobby AI ships to destroy the faction stations of several nearby systems at once. You would also be able to choose if you want to live in a harsh, challenging environment.

What if I still want to preserve a system or two?
Claiming the system for yourself would prevent in from getting taken over by pirates. However, it would still face increased amounts of pirate and trading guild activity if it's right next to a pirate or trading guild system. In addition, since pirates are still your enemy, they would create a warzone if their territory came next to yours.

Yes, yes... but will you perhaps make a few modifications to it afterwards?
Not sure what you mean. I am not on the dev team nor have any control over this. It's just been confirmed that pirates and traders will vie for control of systems.

How fast the pirates and trading guild expand could depend on the amount of
    • ally stations are in the system
    • distant from capital
    • how many systems around the system are owned by the faction
    • how many systems around the system is owned by other factions
    • amount of sectors in the system with stationed owned by the faction
    • amount of planet orbits and asteroid belts.
There could also be a maximum total mass of ai ships to pirates and trading guild. (The total mass could be based on above dot points.)
E.g. if the system is owned by pirates and the surrounding system is owned by pirates than pirate ships that spawn will be huge and their will be multiply pirate ships. The trading guild will have small or no ships in that system unless they have a station there.
If the system is owned by neutral and the surrounding systems are neutral then amount of pirates that spawn will be small.

I like the idea of there being a capital.

IMO being based on amount of planet and asteroid orbits doesn't make too much sense to me.
