What do You think to delete salvage beams and add drills instead?

If there would be collision damage ON (it needs to be fixed now) then it would prevent massive salvage ships (as bigger mass causes collision more harmfull).
Of course ores population and crafting recipes would need to be customized to make it still cool to play.
And with new rails system and logic drilling stations would be possible to make :P

No massive minning = no lag spikes.
And seriously, minning is not cool now so any more interesting way of minning will be cool.

Hmm. You know, you could try this out right now, mostly. Edit the config to give salvage beams very short range, increase the ore multiplier (easier than editing all of the recipes to make up for decreased ore blocks you mine), and, if you're feeling dangerous, turn on collisions as well.

It would not, it would only eliminate medium salvage-ships.
Why? If drills still recieve a grouping bonus to their speed, simply using enough drills per group, and making the face of the ship out of those groups, will allow big salvage ships to drill through everything at full speed, without being damaged.

But collision damage would make it dangerous because some part of Your ship could hit planet

How about a block entity that requires power. When placed on an asteroid it will in an (x) type structure fires a laser that harvest ores underneath it. Adding Modules to the mining block increases the radius but also increases the power consumption. Stacking modules up increases the speed while out handles radius perhaps? The ability to link to storage blocks and then on to factories as well. This way you could be an asteroid miner without necessarily having a large array mining ship.

I totally disagree with scrapping salvage beams though. More, not less.
