I think it would be cool if big ships that have a player in them should be visible on the galaxy map. This could make player interaction increase. I don't see how it could result into trolling. It could be performance heavy to register the position of multiple big ships, but instead you can make it so that the ship position on the map updates ever minute instead of every second. If you are radar jammed you are not visible. This idea came when kupu told me that he would like player interaction to increase when discussing the visibility of warp gates. Maybe players who play as pirates could plan ambushes on players, or you could track down a fleeing enemy who jumped away. Who knows. I think ships that are visible on the map should be somewhere around 100k+ mass, however I think it should be a server config option. Realistically why I think this should exist in harmony with other current gameplay mechanics would be because I am guessing that stations are ususally big, that's why they are visible on the map. So a big ship is also visible on the map. I do not think ships should be visible on the map if they are unmanned, since I know that its common for factions to hide there ships somewhere that is not homebased, or that someone simply logged out. This can solve the problem of people finding ships and being able to loot them easily since they are unmanned.

No practical reason why such a thing should exist. What would be the reasoning for big ships being visible, tens, if not hundreds of thousands of meters away? If it were on a "per ship" basis to broadcast your location, sure. It would be great for use as an SOS, but as a default thing that is always on, why would anyone even consider using a big ship?

For some reason, I really like this idea. It would be a way to encourage people to use smaller ships so, and it could add multiplayer interactions. You mentioned +100k I would hope your talking about mass rather than blocks, because 100k blocks isn't that big in my opinion.

    Support.

It could encourage PvP and player intetaction. And as for the no practical reason, you think that in a hyper advanced environment like this there would be no way to track large ships over a far distance? I think it would be a lovely idea but I'm not sure what else besides practicality that would be a problem.

yes i mean mass. exactly this is what I mean. saw a video today about titans in eve online, and how they attract lots of attention (for raiders). So if you are cruising in a big ship you better watch out for raiders or have an assisting fleet, just to add more interaction. also hit the like button :)

I like the push for more interaction via detection but I think there are a few more graceful ways to get the same effect.
Perhaps something along the lines of being detectable via scanner from longer and longer ranges based on mass, up to the point where anyone in a lil' salvager who wants to avoid getting jumped by a battleship just has to keep their scanner going every few moments and they'll have a couple of star systems of a warning.
Perhaps sectors that have mass above a certain threshold show up as a dark spot against the background, similar (but opposite) to how stars show up when not in your system. That would keep the identity and statistics of the large ship or fleet a mystery while keeping it's general location known to anyone who keeps an eye out.
There's lots of ways to integrate what you're looking for into gameplay, and I think that's worth discussion.

    I definitely support this idea.

It'd come with the bonus of being able to find fleet battles, and those fleets "accidentally" calling for backup from every person on the server and making them far more chaotic.

My one request, though - server configurable setting to determine how much mass shows up at how far. Maybe one sector for every 2-5k mass or something, with Radar Jammers and Cloakers blocking the effect (makes it unmanageable to stay hidden with a supercapital)

...This, I actually really, really like. Combining it with my suggestion up above, then. Scannable range of one sector for every X mass, where X is set by the server admins or something.

Maybe also increase the viewable distance based on the size of the scanner array (not basing it on the ratio of scanner to ship - outright bigger ships should have bigger scanners).

So you're suggesting that instead of you automatically showing up the map. Instead scanners should just be able to detect larger mass ships at a farther range? I could see this being a good idea. But again I think ships with extreme masses +100k or whatever should be easily detected from very large distances

yeah good idea! i was just thinking specifically a big ship that is manned being the attention tracker, but if the sector holds a certain mass that could work too! im just thinking maybe performance problem otherwise it should work.

I also agree that all of this should be configurable by server owners.

I would approve it, but I'd say the default "mass range" for detection would be only for capital ships (bigger then 500k mass), not common battleships. Of course, that's my input for default values, since servers should be allowed to change this easily.

The other suggestions fix this problem.

I want big ships to attract big fights. The bigger the ship, the bigger the fight.
